What:     Open House for Baltimore City School Students enrolled in Automotive Technology programs

When:     Friday, December 9, 2016, 9:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.

Why:   The Baltimore City Public School System offers Automotive Technology in a number of schools as part of its Career and Technology Education (CTE) pathways program. Baltimore City Fleet Management recognizes that not only can it offer the students enrolled in this program the experiential, work-based learning they need, but that the students graduating from the program present a recruitment opportunity for employment with Baltimore City. This mutually beneficial relationship was a great success in the past and this is evident in the several employees of Fleet Management, including at the Supervisor level, who joined the organization through this partnership in the 1990s.

On December 9th, Fleet Management will be hosting an Open House and has invited Automotive Technology Program students from Mergenthaler Vocational-Technical High School (commonly referred to as Mervo), Forest Park High School and Edmondson-Westside High School to attend an event at the City’s main fleet facility. At the Open House, the students will tour the facility and get to hear about the Work Study and Apprenticeship programs to be offered by Fleet Management. During the tour, Fleet’s automotive professionals will explain and demonstrate the wide range of diagnostic, installation, maintenance and repair duties performed on a variety of automotive, heavy trucks, equipment and other mechanical equipment. The students will have an important opportunity to ask questions about how what they are learning translates into practical applicability as well as about workplace expectations.

The students, currently in the 11th and 12th grades will also have the opportunity to complete applications for either program. The Work Study program is a paid Internship, where students will work full-time during summer breaks and part-time during the school year. Individuals in the Apprentice program are considered full-time Baltimore City employees, receiving all the benefits offered. To participate in the programs, all students will need to meet and maintain certain academic and professional standards.
